National libraries are not merely repositories. They are institutions responsible for collecting, cataloguing, preserving, researching and making accessible a country’s documentary and cultural heritage.

This article presents a selection of national libraries and comparable institutions whose collections provide access to books, newspapers, manuscripts, maps, prints, photographs, music, sound recordings, audiovisual materials and digital publications.

London British Library

The British Library holds more than 170 million items. It receives copies of publications issued in the United Kingdom and Ireland under the legal deposit system, including electronic publications.

Its collections cover a wide range of printed and digital materials, making it one of the world’s major research libraries.

Washington, D.C. — Library of Congress

Established in 1800, the Library of Congress serves as the de facto national library of the United States. It houses the U.S. Copyright Office, which administers the national copyright system.

The Library of Congress also receives publications through the U.S. mandatory deposit system and preserves extensive collections covering American history and culture.

Canberra — National Library of Australia

The National Library of Australia collects and preserves materials relating to Australia and the Pacific region. Its collections include books, newspapers, manuscripts, photographs, maps, oral history recordings and digital resources documenting Australia’s cultural and historical heritage.

Madrid — Biblioteca Nacional de España

The Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE) is the institution responsible for collecting, cataloguing, preserving and disseminating Spain’s bibliographic and documentary heritage.

Its collections include manuscripts, incunabula, books, newspapers, maps, prints, photographs, music, sound recordings and audiovisual materials.

The BNE also provides access to extensive digital collections through the Biblioteca Digital Hispánica (BDH) and the Hemeroteca Digital, which allow users to consult digitised books, manuscripts, historical newspapers and magazines.

Santiago de Chile — Biblioteca Nacional de Chile

The Biblioteca Nacional de Xile located in central Santiago, stands as one of the oldest public institutions in Latin America. It contains over 6 million items, including rare manuscripts, historical periodicals, map collections, and the archives of notable Chilean literary figures. Memoria Chilena and the Biblioteca Nacional Digital, platforms offering global open access to digitized manuscripts, photographs, and out-of-copyright publications.

Paris — Bibliothèque Nationale de France

The Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) is one of Europe’s major national libraries. Its historic Richelieu Library is one of its principal sites in Paris, alongside other locations including the François-Mitterrand Library.

The BnF preserves around 40 million documents covering books, manuscripts, prints, maps, photographs, music and other forms of cultural heritage. Its digital library, Gallica, provides extensive access to digitised cultural resources, particularly works that are in the public domain.

German

Leipzig and Frankfurt — Deutsche Nationalbibliothek

The Deutsche Nationalbibliothek is Germany’s national library and operates from two main sites, in Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main.

The Leipzig site houses the historical collections of the former Deutsche Bücherei, founded in 1912, while the Frankfurt site has developed as a major centre for the collection, cataloguing and preservation of Germany’s current national bibliography and digital publications.

Together, both sites are responsible for collecting, cataloguing, preserving and making accessible publications issued in Germany, works published in German, translations of German-language works and publications relating to Germany.

The institution’s collections include printed and digital publications, manuscripts, photographs and other documentary materials. The Deutsches Musikarchiv, located in Leipzig, is responsible for collecting and preserving Germany’s musical heritage.

Italian

Rome — Biblioteca Nazionale

The Biblioteca Nazionale, founded in 1876 following Italian unification, is one of Italy’s principal national libraries.

It receives publications through Italy’s legal deposit system and preserves millions of books, manuscripts, incunabula, maps and other historical documents. Its specialised collections and research services include important resources relating to Italian literature and manuscript heritage.

Portuguese

Lisbon — Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal

The Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal serves as the country’s principal deposit library. It preserves an extensive collection of Portuguese literature, historical documents, manuscripts and other materials relating to Portugal’s cultural heritage.

The institution also manages the Biblioteca Nacional Digital (BND), providing online access to digitised resources.
